I don't use it for group shots, nor close-up portraits at F1.4... it gets faces not eyes specifically.

I heard that D800 knows to focus at the nearest eye of the face...

What you are saying is true assuming that the two FF sensors are of the same general design. Which I am having trouble trying to find information regarding that online.

Did you read the DxOMark testing on he sensor:

Oh, one more question:
I heard that you took a D3, so aborted the D800 purchase plan.

That is strange, as a pro photographer, D800 is better for studio works, especially for those jobs need huge output size.

Why took a fast D3 instead of a high-res D800?

Oh, one more question:

It is OLD CAKE's fault, he got me really interested into Sports photography.
In order to try the best I can, I needed a faster fps camera. And he found me this D3 for me.

Now, I am hooked.

High resolution images of naked woman will have to wait !!

You can have both, a D3 and a D800E

I think D800E is best suit you, naked women = no fabric = no worry of moire

I think the 91K metering sensors is another technology break through in D4/D800 that seldom be mentioned.
In theory this 91k sensor can improve the portrait focusing (especially kids shooting), metering (both with or without iTTL flash), and focus tracking.
However, seldom see user practice to prove what Nikon claimed

I think  D800 is a good solution for bird shooters who can shoot in DX mode with 16MP resolution and tele lens.

But, I DON'T think D800 is a solution for wide-to-normal DX lenses (12-24, 10.5, 17-55. as you said)
Because, if you keep on using  DX mode, why not use a DX body (e.g. D400 or D7x00)? DX body is much cheaper and lighter.

Don't forget the good performance of D800 sensor is based on the FX size sensor, the measurement
base on DX mode is much weaker!

不是價錢問題。
是重量及體積問題，
也是連拍速度問題。

一樣價，都係揀D600。

不是啦，用FF机，可隨時在FF與DX之間轉換，DX机就沒得換。
體積與重量，D600跟D300基本一樣，令我好感動。
只餘下是價錢比D300貴罷了。

所以，D600已是我這階段的夢想相机，而我也快速買了。

I will wait for the D400/D7100 and see... I probably may get the 17-55 first.

For using D800, you may need to upgrade the computer and storage capacity.  It occupies a lot of RAM when doing the editing, especially the RAW files.  So far, I did not experience any out-focus issues as mentioned in some of the forums.  However, you may need to adjust the W/B a bit to get rid of the greenish colour.  Both portrait & landscape photos are very impressive !!!
