For a balanced size vs price vs performance combination, I think the best option at the moment would be M4/3. And since you are using the camera casually, I think the new Olympus PL5 or PM2 would be the best choice in M4/3.
The M4/3 system now have the most diverse lens range and the latest sensor is top notch.
Should be a single focus for all 8 photos.
After all, it is the trade off between DSLR and mirrorless. Without the mirror, the camera+lens is much smaller & lighter, but can't do PDAF, so not good at tracking fast moving object (kids running around).
For fast focusing and tracking feature, the best "small camera" is now Nikon-1 system, if you don't mind the only 1" sensor size.
The second drawback of Nikon-1 is lack of fast portrait prime lens..... the solution now is use the adapter and use Nikon AFS lenses.
Many mirrorless camera can provide high fps, and not bad initial focus speed, but tracking ability is very weak.
