You have pretty good taste Mr. 7up lol.. You have had expensive but good stuff and not top of the line, that is smart lol.. Mostly used like you said, still expensive..lol..I play differently lol...no mean to kiss butt..lol..no need to anyway  . Just telling what I think is truth..

The Marantz 8B is my all time favorite tube amp, better than 9 and ST 70, IMO..very neutral/natural sounding with unbelievable voice and string reproduction. I almost bought it for $350 USD in mid 80s only if it would drive my speakers lol...should listen to this beauty at least once in your life time...It is that good ! Too expensive now if you can find them in Mint condition. Model 9 is probably better in over-all performance, but the range I enjoy the most, it is got to be 8b.
Side story...Why Marantz 8b is better than 8 and many others? The model 8 was a good amp. The designer wasn't happy with it (Sid Smith?) and Saul Marantz himself was a music lover. It was the out-put transformer, lol...Like other manufactures, they out sourced the transformer. Marantz decided to redesign to model 8..gave a few watts more power (was a good thing). Most importantly, they made the out put transformers in house, hand wounded. Tailored to exact specs of what Marantz wanted. That was why it sounded so good. Ultra-linear was the word lol.. |
